Period tracking product and app

Personal Project - Individual Work

May - August, 2024

This is a device for storing sanitary napkins and automatically recording menstrual periods.

It provides a dry environment for storing sanitary napkins, and has a carry-on bag to help users carry the appropriate number of sanitary napkins.

The device can sense the number of sanitary napkins inside to remind users to buy them in time, and sense whether the bag has been taken away to automatically record menstrual periods.

Research Goal

The project uses mixed qualitative research methods to identify behavioral pain points and unmet needs, including Daily Life Observation, Social Media Analysis, Desk Research, Personas, and Focus Groups. Aiming to understand why users have problems consistently tracking their menstrual cycles and managing period-related preparation in daily life.

Key Insights

  • Users resist the effort of tracking.

Users often forget or stop recording because the process feels tedious and mentally demanding.

  • Uncertainty about the cycle

Irregular cycles make prediction difficult, leading to inconvenience, stress and self-doubt.

  • Period preparation is overlooked.

Users often forget to buy or bring sanitary products, even when they are aware their period is approaching.

  • Apps focus on data, not habits.

Most solutions emphasize logging information but fail to support real-life habits and preparation.

Design Opportunities

How might we reduce the effort required for menstrual tracking through automation?

How might we help users prepare for their period without relying on memory?

How might we integrate tracking and product reminders into a seamless daily experience?

The product is divided into two parts, one is a small bag that can be carried by users.
The other is a drawer, which is used to store sanitary napkins, and a compartment is added at the front as an area for desiccant.

A Hall-effect sensor is embedded inside the case to detect changes in the magnetic field. When the carry-on bag attached by a magnet is removed, the sensor is triggered and sends a signal to the app via an ESP32, automatically initiating period tracking.
A weight sensor at the bottom of the case estimates the remaining number of sanitary pads and notifies the user when supplies are running low.
